John Janzen has been diving and boating since childhood, completing his first boating course at only 10 years of age. Since then, he has earned numerous diving certifications and logged hundreds of hours aboard his dive boat Deep Quest on Lake Superior. John also holds a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin and has over 15 years experience working as a Chemist in the aerospace and defense industries making contributions to programs in NASA, Naval Research Labs, Defense Threat Reduction Agency and National Missile Defense to name a few.
John’s major diving interest lies in the deepest shipwrecks of the Great Lakes and as a result, he has gained much experience in cold water deep diving. For example, in July 2004, he and John Scoles became the first divers to reach the stern of the Carl D. Bradley at a depth of 380 ft (119 m) in Lake Michigan.
John has dived most of the major wrecks in Lake Superior including those at Isle Royale, Whitefish Point, the Keweenaw and Alger Underwater Preserves, the Apostle Islands and the famous Gunilda shipwreck in Canada. Before turning to rebreathers, John was an experienced open circuit trimix diver.
John developed and wrote the factory authorized service manual for the Inspiration rebreather as well as The Diver’s Guide to Lake Wazee and various articles for Advanced Diver Magazine.
John is a TDI Inspiration CCR Instructor with the goal of providing the highest quality and most rigorous Inspiration rebreather training available. He allows a maximum of two students per class in order to provide the best learning environment and his courses cover far more than the required minimums. John has the ability to teach in both Imperial (U.S.) and metric measurement units and will introduce all of his U.S. students to the advantages of the metric system for CCR diving.
